How Republicans rejecting Biden's win could be detrimental to our democracy

For those who believe in democracy, President-elect Joe Biden's confirmation comes as no surprise. After all, he did surpass the 270 electoral votes needed to secure the U.S. presidency. However, certain Republicans have difficulty with this truth, working tirelessly to overturn Biden's win and make a mockery out of our country's democratic system.
On Wednesday, both chambers of Congress will count the states' electoral votes and officially declare Biden the next president of the United States of America. Normally, this transition would be seamless. However, Trump has since refused to concede, continuing to believe he won the 2020 election.
If it weren't so embarrassing for our nation, it would be comical. Who am I kidding, the entire thing is hilarious. Even in his final days in office, Trump still believes himself to be the victor of the election. What's more, Trump still manages to maintain a semblance of loyalty among certain Republicans, with many announcing they will object to Biden's win.
Numerous of Congressional Republicans are planning to undermine American democracy during Wednesday's session. It won't do any good. Come January 20th, Biden will be sworn in as America's 46th President and there's really not a whole lot Trump's most loyal allies can do about it.
However, Trump's inability to go peacefully - along with certain Republicans choosing to indulge him—has certainly left a taint on America's democracy that will echo. The latest actions from Congressional Republicans goes against the values they pledged to uphold as a politicians. But not all Republicans are on board with Trump's plan to overturn Biden's win.
In a 21-page memo sent to her colleagues, House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney alleged these loyalties set a "dangerous precedent" that undercut core conservative principles.In addition, former House Speaker Paul Ryan said the arguments "strike at the foundation of our republic."
But this behavior isn't shocking. Especially considering legislation Republicans continue to pass that isn't always in the best interest of our nation as a whole. So it's not surprising certain Republicans are undermining the wishes of American voters and challenging democratic norms.
It's a blatant abuse of power which Trump's cronies fail to acknowledge, merely because their moral compass is jaded. Either that, or they're too frightened to speak up on account of being fired. I've lost track of how many officials Trump fired from his campaign because they either didn't agree with or amuse him anymore.
With two weeks left in office, along with a tarnished reputation, why would anyone want to align themselves with Trump at this point? What could he possibly offer anyone other than shame? Biden won this election. There's no proof that states otherwise. The only issue standing in the way is Trump's massive ego.
Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday to explicitly voice his opinions on the matter.
"The Vice President has the power to reject fraudulently chosen electors," Trump wrote, alluding to an inaccurate theory that Vice President Mike Pence has the power to overturn the results of the election on Wednesday. Of course, this information is completely baseless.
I believe we're better than this. Both as a country and as human beings. We have to fight for what is right and hold people accountable for what is wrong. Politicians should understand this better than anyone considering their constitutional roles. There are rules put into place for a reason. If politicians choose to defy those rules, what does the future hold for our democracy?
