Tips for conquering your fears and anxiety
Why do we allow our fears to hold us hostage?
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of fear is "an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger." Many of us have doubts that fester into insecure emotions. In most cases, disbelief turns into fear.
Why do we allow our fears to hold us hostage? What is the root cause of them? How can we conquer these emotions?
The first thing you must do is face your fears, head-on! I confronted my fears by practicing journaling as a way to identify fear when I encountered it. Keep in mind, journaling your reactions for a few weeks to detect patterns is essential. These patterns indicate when those emotions occur, how often, and what situations trigger those fears.
The answers to those questions give us the tools to dismantle those adverse emotions. Besides, anxiety levels with fear can send our bodies and mind into a frenzy, hence why the second action I took to overcome my fears was practicing mindfulness to support my journey.
Mindfulness is the human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are (and what we're doing), and the ability not to overreact or become overwhelmed by what's going on around us.
I blocked out the negative thoughts about myself that resonated in my head, such as "you don't deserve this" or "I am not able to do this." When the feelings of defeat enter your mind, make sure you do not acknowledge them because you will generate more fears.
Lastly, I started to recognize my successes and learn from my failures. We tend to overlook how much we have succeeded despite our losses. Our efforts towards growth and self-perseverance are what eliminates those feelings.
We have to celebrate every part of the journey to appreciate the results.
