Is Donald Trump seriously starting his own social media platform? Unfortunately - yes.
After former president Donald Trump left office I was relived. What self-respecting American, who believes in democracy and basic humanity, wouldn't be? I thought he would disappear into a void and never resurface again. Unfortunately, disappearing from the public eye doesn't suit Trump's nature. In fact, it goes entirely against it. So it didn't necessarily shock me when he announced he would be starting his own social media platform.
On Sunday, Trump's spokesperson, Jason Miller, announced the news to Howard Kurtz on Fox's "MediaBuzz," explaining that Trump will be "returning to social media in probably about two or three months." Wonderful, who else is bubbling with dread?
The announcement comes two months after Trump was permanently suspended from many social platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, following his incitement of the US Capitol riots on January 6. Since Trump's permanent suspension across numerous social media platforms, the world has seemed a little more quiet.
In addition, Miller added that Trump's return to social media will be with "his own platform" and will attract "tens of millions" of new users and "completely redefine the game." Miller also added that "numerous companies" have approached Trump and that the former president has since had many "high-powered meetings" at Mar-a-Lago since.
"This is something that I think will be the hottest ticket in social media," Miller explained to Kurtz. "It's going to completely redefine the game, and everybody is going to be waiting and watching to see what President Trump does, but it will be his own platform."
This is far from surprising, considering how Trump always plays by his own set of distorted rules. When something doesn't work in his favor, Trump somehow manages to flip the switch and mold the rules to his liking. However, starting your own social media company isn't as easy as it appears.
Even if Trump managed to launch his service, it would be challenging for him to regain the reach he once had. To give you an idea, before Trump's suspension, he had nearly 90 million followers on Twitter, and 32 million "likes" and 35 million followers on his inactive Facebook page.
Hopefully Trump will get the message and leave Silicon Valley to the technology pros. Trust me, the world will be better off.
